Meteorologist Robb Ellis led the StormTrack 8 team at WISH TV from 2013 to 2016

Robb Ellis is a freelance meteorologist, television host and on-air personality with 10 years of experience on television and a no-nonsense approach to threatening weather. Using a relaxed and casual delivery on-air, Robb brings an informative, teaching style of forecasting along with a quick wit and sarcastic humor.

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Robb grew up in the heat of the Southeast. From summertime thunderstorms to sweltering triple-digits, it was the perfect setting for catching the weather bug.

It was Hurricane Hugo in 1989 that sparked Robb’s interest in weather as a boy. That storm devastated his home state of South Carolina, and planted the seed of meteorology in his mind.

Robb began studying at the University of South Carolina before transferring to North Carolina State University. There, he received his Bachelor of Science in Meteorology.

While attending college, Robb worked at both the State Climatology Office of South Carolina and the North Carolina State Climate Office. Robb satisfied his love of the science of weather with an understanding of climate, data and research, including the Carolina Sandhills where he grew up.

While finishing his meteorology degree, Robb began his television career at WFMY in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Moving from the foothills of North Carolina to the coast, Robb couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be in hurricane alley. At WECT in Wilmington, North Carolina, he took the lead of the weather team in one of the most active hurricane markets in the country. And southeastern North Carolina saw its fair share of severe weather as well.

Covering multiple tornado outbreaks, several hurricanes and tropical storms and rare coastal snowfall events, Robb spent 4 years in southeastern North Carolina.

In 2013, it was time for something completely different, to take a chance and try forecasting outside of the southeast. At WISH TV in Indianapolis, Robb found his new home. From forecasting live at the Indianapolis 500 on race day, to record Indiana tornado outbreaks, the experience has been the highlight of his career.

In television, timing can open up wonderful opportunities. This time, the opportunity to serve as Chief Meteorologist in his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina was too much to pass up. Robb seized the chance to work at the station he watched when Hurricane Hugo had come ashore all those years ago.

Now Robb returns to Indianapolis, but maintains close ties to South Carolina where his family lives. Weather and television remain a passion in an exciting industry that continues to change.
